How to seize a ship at sea.

7/18/21

Today I had a lawyer ride with me to the airport.  We were talking about the draught and I  mentioned to him the grain ships in Duluth that have to leave tonnage on the docks because they can't clear the bottom of the St. Mary's River between Detroit and Windsor.

He then told me about the huge oil ships that can't get into unload at Houston.  He mad mention that some ships will stay out as far as 90 miles and have smaller ships meet them and transfer the oil on to them and they bring it dockside at the refinery.

He mentioned that he worked for a law firm and at times they would seize ships much like reposessing a car.   Its no different than someone not making a car payment.  After a few months the financier wants the car.   Such is the case when it comes to these mega freighters.  If the Coast Guard wouldn't go that far out to sea, the refinance company seized the oil at the docks.  Through a process that I couldn't quite follow the seizing of the ship came a day or two later.

I asked about crew disruption on the ship.  He said no problem, they got days off and taken to a shore and often they worked independently from the ownership of the ship.   A  person doesn't often think about repossessing a ocean freighter, or huge planes,  but you have think...why not...shit can happen on a big scale to.
